Historical context
A nationally significant mining site
Located about 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife in the Lac de Gras region, Ekati began diamond production in October 1998. Burgundy historically reported 122 mining leases totaling approximately 113,485 hectares, with developed pits, underground workings, processing infrastructure, worker accommodation and water-management systems. Ekati is an important part of the history of Canada's northern diamond industry.
Current legal and operating status
Under court receivership
The operating companies entered insolvency proceedings in May 2026. On July 14, 2026, PwC was appointed court receiver. The receiver has reported that mining operations ceased and that current priorities include care and maintenance, environmental protection and planning for reclamation and closure. MMT's project interest is preliminary and does not change these obligations or imply control of the site.

Rationale
Why MMT is evaluating Ekati
Ekati combines substantial historical mining infrastructure with a complex Arctic environmental setting. Its existing water-management systems and ongoing closure planning make it an appropriate candidate for a disciplined, site-specific assessment of technologies that may complement conventional treatment and monitoring.
